An introduction to medium format film photography

Medium format film cameras are gaining in popularity again thanks to their improved image quality and a unique look, but there are a few things to know before you consider giving it a try, says Damien Demolder


AP Editor Nigel Atherton shot this portrait of model Amelie Hurley (@ameliehurley) using a Hasselblad 500CM and Ilford FP4 Plus film from Analogue Wonderland. It was lit using natural light with a Lastolite TriFlector. The ’blad was the pro workhorse of choice for decades, and is still probably the most desirable medium format film camera, due to the exceptional build and image quality.
