MUD Foundation Kicks Off the Third Year of Media Under Dystopia, a Hybrid Exhibition Program Supporting Artists Working at the Center of Art + Technology

MUD Foundation announces Media Under Dystopia 3.0: WASD, a new exhibition that features projects by artists that explore ideas of collaboration, performance, extractivism, and the intersection of physical and digital realms. At its core, the exhibition centers around the use of the internet as its own creative medium.

“WASD” keys became the standard for moving around virtual worlds on the left side of our keyboard interface. First used in 1986 in “Dark Castle,” a video game made by Silicon Beach Software, WASD keys became the primary form of navigating virtual spaces moving forward. The WASD edition of Media Under Dystopia 3.0 takes on the idea of WASD keys as a conceptual framework that invites participants and visitors to navigate the space of the internet as an artistic metaverse.

Kei Ito, Night Lights Denver and The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins project footage of nuclear bomb on the Daniels and Fisher Tower.

Tomorrow morning while most of Denver sleeps, light will strike the Daniels and Fisher Tower, memorializing the birth of the atom bomb.

Projected neon green light will wash over the tower, showing an explosion in reverse: a mushroom cloud contracting, and the bomb’s victims — mannequins, houses, vehicles — reconstructing, returning to their prior state and to a pre-nuclear world.

The project, a video called Aborning New Light by Japan-born and Baltimore-based artist Kei Ito, is a reconstruction of archival government nuclear testing footage, edited to show the bomb testing in reverse. It’s a collaboration with Night Lights Denver, which projects large scale works of art downtown, and The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins.

A temporary history

The Brewery Arts Heart (BAC) was founded in 1975 by a group of artists yearning for a place of their very own. Immediately after an extreme grassroot work, they raised the income to obtain the Historic Carson Brewery Enterprise, a person of Nevada’s oldest structures, and on June 9, 1979 their eyesight of an Artwork Heart turned a fact and the Brewery Arts Center was born.

That initial vision integrated studio room for visible artists, two galleries, a smaller black box theater, and a Grand Ballroom Exhibition Hall. Currently, the custom of producing space for artwork carries on and the BAC now encompasses 3 historic buildings on two city blocks in Carson City’s Historic West Side including a 250 seat Effectiveness Corridor.
