Two workshops to design new City Gym mural

The City of New Smyrna Beach and Atlantic Center for the Arts will host two workshops on a new mural planned for a City Gym exterior wall at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 in the Alonzo “Babe” James Community Center at 201 N. Myrtle Ave. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22 in the Coronado Civic Center at 150 N. Pine St.

During the workshops, ACA artists will ask participants to share a pattern design that is meaningful to their culture or family heritage. Examples include quilts, family crests, cultural fabric patterns (e.g. African kente, Scottish tartans, Japanese mons, etc.), or a simple design that is representative of their interests.

Atlantic Center for the Arts

Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach hosts classes, meetings and exhibits.

University of Central Florida Flying Horse Editions: The Art of Collaboration will be on display until Oct. 30 in the Pabst Visitor Center on the main campus, 1414 Art Center Ave.

Flying Horse Editions is a collaborative research studio for visual artists at UCF.

ACA is now accepting applications for the Artists-in-Residence Program. Spend three weeks developing your work with the personal support and mentorship of internationally renowned artists in the visual arts, literature, music composition, and choreography. Participation is limited to up to eight people for each discipline.

Due to Covid-19 and the immense stress it has put on artists, ACA will be offering full scholarships to accepted artists who qualify. Deadline is Sept. 19.

Hub on Canal

The August exhibit opening in the Founders Gallery of The Hub on Canal at 132 Canal St. in New Smyrna Beach will be “Meant To Be by Jeff Thamert .”

The exhibit will be on display to Sept, 26.

Silk Painting two-day workshop with Carol Baker will meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4.

The fee is $100 for members; $110 for non-members (plus $20 supplies fee paid to instructor on day of workshop). Limited to six students.

Painting with Morris Wiener Workshop will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 6. Students will learn the basics of oil painting and leave the workshop with their own creation. No mineral spirits will be used.

Color with Eliza Midgett will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Sept. 7, and four consecutive Thursday beginning Sept. 9.

OMAM’s in-person free Family Art Night returns

Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s popular free Family Art Night returns to an in-person format Friday, Sept. 3, but at a new location.

With museum construction ongoing, OMAM is temporarily moving the program to the Parish Hall at St. James Episcopal Church, 38. S. Halifax Drive.

Adults with their children or grandchildren are invited to drop-in between 6 and 7:30 p.m. to make a creative wall hanging from recycled and colorful materials. Art supplies are provided.

Face coverings will be required for everyone and room capacity is limited.

Museum of Arts & Sciences

The Museum of Arts & Sciences offers events and exhibits at 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach.

The fourth installment of the annual Beaux Arts Group of Central Florida exhibit, “A Symphony of Color” is on display to Nov. 28.

The Beaux Arts Group of Central Florida was founded in 1962 by the students of the late Lillian “Lu” Belmont of New York City. The group is comprised of 50 professional artists, working in all mediums, who place a strong emphasis on experimental creative approaches brought to quality design conception and techniques.

Smithsonian Museum Day will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18.

Film acting class

DarkSide Theatre is hosting a film acting class for adults from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursday at 600 S. Yonge St., Suite 7A, Ormond Beach.

Learn the basics and advanced techniques of both on-camera and stage acting with professional coaching and directing.

Classes are designed for actors of all experience levels. Class size is limited to ensure quality instruction.

Southeast Museum of Photography

Conversations On Conflict Photography will be on display Aug. 24 to Dec. 4 in the Southeast Museum of Photography at Daytona State College, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.

Conversations on Conflict Photography features work by 12 award-winning photographers whose groundbreaking images have often defined global conflicts. Through these images, this show examines the stories behind the photos and the ways the photographers approached them.

Admission is free. Masks are strongly encouraged. Disposable masks are available for free at the front desk. Front-line museum staff will continue to wear masks to ensure the safety of visitors.

“Adam Straus: Out of Paradise” will be displayed until Sept. 12 at 100 N. Woodland Blvd.

Artist Talk

The DeLand Fall Festival of the Arts in partnership with the Museum of Art DeLand will host an Artist Talk as a part of an ongoing series focusing on Black art, artists and art history.

The event will be at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 at the main facility at 600 N. Woodland Blvd.

Guest speaker will be Tim Adebule. Nicknamed “Bushman Tim,” Mr. Adebule is Nigerian, now living in Orlando. He is an artist and painter. He founded Three Mask Gallery in Orlando 30 years ago as an art gallery, African clothing and products store and popular venue for art, music, dance, drumming and art talks.
