Simcock sunflowers and car show
SWANSEA — ‘Tis the season — sunflower season. Head to Simcock Farm to pick your own blossoms from their sunflower field Monday to Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This Saturday, Aug. 21, the farm will host a car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is free. All cars, trucks, and bikes are invited to take part in the show. Trophies will be awarded five top picks and a best of show, so make sure to register upon arrival.
No Joke Smoke BBQ will be on site for the event, and guests can also get some delicious Simcock Farm ice cream.

Outdoor movie nights
FALL RIVER — The Fall River Housing Authority is hosting Outdoor Movie Nights on Mondays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at various housing authority properties across the city.
“Moana” was the feature presentation at Father Diaferio on Aug. 16 and next up is “Coco” at Heritage Heights on Aug. 23.
The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are needed. Just bring your own blanket and chair.

A Colorful Week at the Library
Summer’s not over yet! There are still lots of fun things happening at the Fall River Public Library this week, Aug. 16-20, for kids, teens, and adults.
Starting Monday, Aug. 16, kids can pick up a Magic Color Scratch Fish in the Children’s Room. Scratch off the coating and reveal a rainbow of amazing colors. They will be available all week or while supplies last.
The Amazing Spider-Man swung into the library on Monday morning to visit with kids. Free comic books will be available all week, while supplies last.
On Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 11 a.m., experience a circus like no other when the Cactus Head Puppets present Monster Circus. Encounter magnificent creatures from the wilds of your imagination as their human caretaker tries to teach them new tricks. These are a bunch of friendly, colorful monsters that really know how to put on a show. Bring your blanket to spread on the lawn and enjoy the fun.
On Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., join the library under the Elm Street Story Tent as they share the story of Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and other tales from under the sea. The storytime will feature a take-home craft, and each child attending will receive a cuddly, plush fish. This event is sponsored in part by Cymry’s Christmas Wish.

Wednesday, Aug. 18, is the third Wednesday of the month, so that means it’s Book Club day at the library. The afternoon Books and Tea Club meets at 2 p.m. in the Meeting Room. All readers are invited to share a book they’ve enjoyed recently and to get recommendations from other readers. Light refreshments will be served. Then, at 6 p.m., the Fall River Library Book Club meets in the Meeting Room to discuss this month’s book, “The Other Einstein” by Marie Benedict.
Thursday, Aug. 19, brings a free family concert featuring Will Parker at 11 a.m. Everyone is invited to bring a blanket or towel to spread on the lawn and snacks to enjoy during Will’s lively, toe-tapping show. This concert is sponsored by Debby and Richard Danner.
Finally, all summer readers are invited for the End of Summer Party at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. All the children who participated in our Tales & Tails summer reading program will receive a reading certificate and book prize and be entered into our summer reading raffle for exciting prizes, including a bike.
The morning will also feature a performance by “Professor Tony Baloney’s World of Magic and Make-Believe!” Parents are invited to spread their blankets on the lawn and bring snacks to this event.

Ed the Wizard popping into library
SOMERSET — Ed the Wizard and his Balloon Animal Twisting Workshop will appear at the Somerset Public Library on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Due to the popularity of this workshop, there will be two separate workshops starting starting at 5:30 and 7 p.m. Patrons will learn the art of balloon twisting as they create their own dog, bunny, cat, and more. No balloon twisting experienced required.

Westport Summer Concert Series
WESTPORT — Westport Recreation’s Summer Concert Series, which kicked off in July, continues this Thursday night with a performance by Moxie.
Concerts take place every Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. behind the Town Hall Annex building, 856 Main Road, on the newly renovated outdoor stage.
Tickets are $5 per person or $15 per family. Pre-register below or pay at the gate.
In the event of inclement weather the concert will be held in the Annex Gym at the same location. All current COVID guidelines will be followed.
The concerts are made possible by the Westport Cultural Council, Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust Grant administered by Bank of America and are sponsored by Sen. Michael Rodrigues.

Relax with gong meditation
TIVERTON — Sounds of Harmony will be visiting Four Corners Arts Center on Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m. for an Outdoor Gong Meditation.
This full moon Sounds of Harmony Gong Meditation program will facilitate inspiration, relaxation and rejuvenation. The sound vibrations of gongs, bells, crystal bowls and assorted resonant instruments will wash around and through you to enhance a meditative state. This event will include an introduction to attunement through breath and body awareness, a dynamic sound celebration, and a finish with grounding techniques and gentle movement to help integrate your experience.
This event will take place outdoors. Please bring a chair or blanket to lie on and wear comfortable/warm clothes. Gong players Kevin and Sarah Bell have been offering sound meditations since 2017 and have studied with Grand Gong Master Don Conreaux. Sarah has taught yoga since 1990.

Best of Broadway concert
MARION — On Friday, Aug. 20, there will be a rededication ceremony for the Robert O. Broomhead Bandstand at Island Wharf in Marion.
Several years ago, the bandstand was refurbished and during the construction, the commemorative plaques were misplaced. Subsequently, a new plaque was fabricated that indicates the dedication of the bandstand to longtime past band member and trombonist Robert O. Broomhead (1903-1981). It also displays the founding year of the Marion Concert Band; 1878. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. followed directly by the “Best of Broadway” concert.
The Marion Concert Band continues its Friday evening concert series with a program of music from the Broadway stage. The program includes highlights from some of Broadway’s most memorable shows.
The concert, under the direction of Tobias Monte, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Robert O. Broomhead Bandstand, Island Wharf off Front Street in Marion. All concerts are free and open to the public. “Like” us on Facebook at “Marion Town Band” for up-to-date announcements and rain cancellation notices.
Outdoor movies in Westport
WESTPORT — This Saturday, Aug. 21, the Westport Recreation Department will host a viewing of Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” as part of its ongoing Outdoor Movie Night.
Outdoor Movie Nights will be held Saturdays, once a month, through October. Movies begin at sundown, located at the outdoor stage behind the Town Hall Annex building, 856 Main Road, Westport. No fee, just any donation you would like to give.
In the event of inclement weather, the movie will be held in the Annex Gym at the same location. All current covid guidelines will be followed.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket. Food donations also accepted for the Westport Food Pantry.

Borden murder re-enactments
FALL RIVER — Lizzie Borden took an axe. … or did she?
Come and join the Lizzie Borden House for their yearly re-enactment commemorating the anniversary of the 1892 double homicide of Andrew and Abby Borden to decide for yourself.
To ensure the safety of guests, cast, and staff alike the event will be held virtually. A cast of eight actors will be performing a re-enactment of the events following the murders live from inside the house. At the end there will be a 30-minute Q&A with the cast and online audience members.
A Lizzie Borden re-enactment online event will be held Sunday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $16 per ticket and donations are welcome.

Golf day camp for kids
FALL RIVER — The Mayor’s Office, in partnership with the Fall River Country Club, will present a one-day youth golf day camp on Aug. 23.
Fall River youth ages 6-14 are invited to tour the course and learn about the sport of golf from local professionals.
This free camp will take place Aug. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch is provided.
Transportation will be available via bus from the Fall River YMCA, leaving at 8:30 am.

Kids Art Week
WESTPORT — Westport will host a Kids Art Week, kicking off Monday, Aug. 23. A professional art instructor will help kids explore various art materials to make really cool projects. Creativity, imagination and having fun with art is what it’s all about.
The program, led by Lan Quan, is geared toward children ages 5-12. It will be held Monday, Aug. 23, to Thursday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m.to noon. All supplies are included; see below for the different projects/themes they will do:
Monday, Aug. 23 – Paint with Nature
Kids will explore colors of nature, do some light play then venture into using natural elements to create a variety of art pieces: using flora to make imprints, rocks to create pigments, painting with sticks, painting on birch wood. Together we will explore ways to appreciate nature.
Tuesday, Aug. 24 – Making a Special Book
Make a take home book or journal that will be created using painting, lettering, memory prompts, etc. A great place to save small mementos.
Wednesday, Aug. 25 – Nature Mobile and Found Sculptures
Using both found natural objects and recycled household items we will create a nature mobile as will as a 3D Natural Sculpture.
Thursday, Aug. 26 – Bird Houses, Hummingbird Nests and Yard Art
We will paint, play and create fun objects to bring art and nature into the yard while learning about local birds, hummingbirds and bees.
Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle with you each day. Wear clothes that can get messy.
Masks will be worn at all times, with mask breaks outside when needed. Social distancing will be encouraged. The gym has high ceilings, good ventilation and air conditioning. When eating snacks, we will be socially distanced.

FALL RIVER — St. Anthony of the Desert Maronite Catholic Church, 300 North Eastern Ave., is hosting a three-day Mahrajan Food Festival this month.

FALL RIVER — Fall River YMCA is hosting its inaugural 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament on Sunday, Aug. 29, at Highland Park Courts. Check in is at 10:30 a.m. and games begin at noon.
Registrations deadlines are Friday, Aug. 13, for the Adult Division and Friday, Aug. 27, for the Teen Division.
There will be prizes for the winning team of each division. The event will also feature live music by DJ Fresco, Mobile DJ Services, activities for kids, food and concession.
The cost is $5 for entry in the 3-point contest.

On Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m., the library will be screening the 2021 Oscar winner “Nomadland” (2020; rated R) starring Frances McDormand and David Strathairn. A woman in her 60s, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. Based on the book of the same name by Jessica Bruder.

Yoga, painting and plays at RJD House
NEW BEDFORD — There’s lots to do at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum this month.
The museum will hostYoga in the Garden with Nicole Winning on Fridays through Aug. 27, from 8 to 9 a.m.
Experience the restorative ambiance of RJD’s historic gardens, from your first opening breath of awareness to final savasana. The instructor will lead a Vinyasa class suitable for any level of yogi. Plein Air Painting in the Garden with Devin McLaughlin will take place Mondays, Aug. 23 and Sept. 12, at 9:30 a.m.
Paint in the historic gardens of the RJD. “En plein air”, meaning, in the open air, allows you to paint from direct observation. Students with no experience, as well as those with some experience, are welcome. The instructor will concentrate on working individually with students.

The Glass Horse Project will present its Shakespeare in New Bedford performance of “As You Like It” Aug. 19-21, at 7 p.m.
Join them for a frolic in the forest this summer with William Shakespeare’s romantic, pastoral comedy “As You Like It.” In a tale of mistaken identities, melancholic lords, and a multitude of laughs, “As You Like It” follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin Celia, to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden. Performances will take place on the RJD’s covered patio. Donations accepted in lieu of a fee.

August Adventures offers free museum admission
Children’s Museum of Greater Fall River and the New Bedford Whaling Museum are among the many places your family can enjoy for free this month as the Highland Street Foundation launches its August Adventures program.
Each day throughout the month of August there is one museum, zoo, nature sanctuary or event offered with no admission fee.
August Adventures, modeled after Highland Street’s long-standing Free Fun Fridays program, will provide enriching opportunities for individuals, children and families throughout the state. From children’s museums to art to nature sanctuaries, there is something for everyone.

Spindle City Fest returns
FALL RIVER — The Narrows Center for the Arts is gearing up for the return of its popular Spindle City Fest on Sept. 11.

FALL RIVER — Fall River’s free Drive-In Movie Series continues Aug. 30 with a viewing of “Black Panther” at B.M.C. Durfee High School. Free tickets are available in person at City Hall or at Greater Fall River Re-Creation, 45 Rock St., or online at Eventbrite on the first of every month.
The event will feature free food, giveaways, raffle prizes, photo booth, caricatures, petting zoo, games and other activities.

August happenings at Heritage
FALL RIVER — Arts and culture are alive and well at Heritage State Park. This month, the park will host a number of outdoor events, from concerts to plays to art classes for kids and a nature scavenger hunt.
Their theater is also open again and features daily showings of “The Fabric of Fall River” and “Safe Houses: Fall River and the Underground Railroad.” Exhibits have also been freshened up with new photos.
Wednesday, Aug. 18: MassDOT Davol Street corridor public open house information session, 9 a.m. to noon and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Parents Night Out
WESTPORT— A parents night out is a kids night to play!
Parents, enjoy a nice night out with each other or with friends while staff at Westport Recreation play with your kids on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 9 p.m.
They will keep your kids active and entertained through games, activities, crafts and more. They will play outside as much as possible but will also have the gym to use. A snack will be provided or you can have your child bring their own snack. When children eat their snack we will do so socially distanced.
Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle and mask.
Wearing a mask will be required at all times, but we will try to take socially distanced mask breaks outside when needed. Social distancing will be encouraged and we will spend as much time as we can playing outside, utilizing the playground, basketball court, outdoor stage and grass area. The gym is well ventilated with tall ceilings. All toys, sports equipment, tables and chairs will be sanitized before and after use.
The event is open to families with children ages 4-12 and will take place in the Town Hall Annex Gym and outside area, 856 Main Road.

Hiking Tiverton
TIVERTON — Take a hike with Tiverton Public Library on Monday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m.
Explore Weetamoo Woods, Pardon Gray Preserve, Pocasset Ridge, Highland Woods, Fort Barton, and more. Tiverton has an amazing array of nature trails, many with easy access and some that challenge robust hikers.
Tiverton Open Space Commission veteran Garry Plunkett will overview all the town’s trail networks, explaining their varied ecology and historical context to provide a better understanding of what hikers can see along the trails.
Longtime Tiverton hikers Rosy and Jim Probasco will give hiking tips and demonstrate AllTrails, a popular hiking app that helps you stay on track while recording distance, speed and more.
Refreshments will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Friends of Tiverton Libraries. Tiverton Public Library is located at 34 Roosevelt Ave., Tiverton.
Hit the city outdoor market
FALL RIVER — The Fall River Farmers and Artisans Market (FR FAM) is setting up shop in downtown Fall River.
FR FAM is a bi-weekly event that invites residents and visitors to a fun, family-friendly event where they can support small businesses and SouthCoast entrepreneurs.
The Fall River Farmers and Artisans, which kicked off July 11, will take place every other Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Old Second Street. This picturesque cobblestoned pedestrian walkway, located across from the Government Center on Jeremiah V Sullivan Drive, will host a dynamic marketplace where consumers will be able to purchase a variety of locally made products, vintage goods, artisanal foods, and fresh produce from local farms. Each event will feature a rotating list of vendors, so you’ll never have the same experience twice.
In addition to vendors, the events will also feature local musicians, live art demonstrations and free children’s activities.
The Fall River Farmers and Artisans Market is presented by Craftyish Shop, Fall River Arts and Culture Coalition, Viva Fall River, and the City of Fall River.

SOAM Saturdays in Swansea
SWANSEA — The Southcoast Open Air Market, which kicked off in June, is setting up shop every Saturday through Oct. 23 at the Swansea YMCA, 271 Sharps Lot Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The goal is to provide a gathering point for our town and surrounding communities, centered around everything fresh, local, and handmade. SOAM features a rotating selection of handmade goods, handcrafted foods, fresh produce and meats, and live and local music.
Game Night at Somerset library

Jon Pousette-Dart is best known as an American classic and folk-rock songwriter, musician, and performing artist. Growing up in Suffern, NY with a household of artists, he separated himself by picking up a guitar at the age of 10 and mapping out a life in music before he ever attended a little league game.

Chamber Invitational golf tourney
The Chamber Invitational Golf Tournament will be held Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Acushnet River Valley Golf Course.
Proceeds from this event will help support the efforts of One SouthCoast Chamber in its mission to advocate for business advancement, economic growth, and job creation for the benefit and the SouthCoast region.
The cost per golfer is $175.
The tournament will be played in a Scramble format with prizes awarded to the top three teams. The event includes lunch, a golf cart, 18-holes of golf, a golfer’s gift bag, raffle tickets, a grand prize ticket and more.
One SouthCoast Chamber will present their Community Leadership Award the event.
This achievement recognizes two individuals who have supported the development of the SouthCoast, both civically and economically.
This year we will be honoring Carl Taber of BayCoast Bank and Brian LeComte of Gold Medal Bakery.

Summer concerts at Linden Place
BRISTOL, R.I. – Linden Place is hosting a Summer Concert Series in its historic gardens. Concerts are held on select Tuesdays this summer, through Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, concerts will be moved to the ballroom.
The eclectic lineup of musicians will keep you coming back all summer. This concert series is a family-friendly event featuring a variety of live, local-based bands and performers and a mix of musical genres including jazz, classic rock, country, R&B, bluegrass, and more.

Fall River’s Day of Portugal
FALL RIVER — After a year on hiatus due to COVID pandemic, the Day of Portugal festival returns to the Gates of the City this month.
Originally slated to happen in June, around the Day of Portugal holiday on June 10, the popular annual event was pushed to August at the Portas da Cidade landmark on Ponta Delgada Boulevard, near the Battleship Cove.
Ten different groups and musicians will perform at the festival, including Jorge Ferreira, Marc Dennis and The Portuguese Kids. The event kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 19, with a “Taste of Portugal” from local restaurants, and wraps up on Sunday with a children’s fair with activities like face painting and train rides.
Enjoy music on New Bedford beach
NEW BEDFORD — Now in its fourth season, Reggae/Music on West Beach is a four-part summer series featuring live bands and DJs spinning the best in various reggae styles along with new music genres such as Latin Jazz and hip-hop.
The event will run on Aug. 15 and 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. Reggae is always the last Sunday of each month while new musical genres are brought in for the middle of the month dates.
The event will be held at the West Beach Pavilion located at 239 W. Rodney French Blvd. across from Hazelwood Park. Patrons are encouraged to bring beach chairs, pack a picnic and groove to the vibes. A select number of food trucks and vendors will offer a variety of delicious local offerings.

Known for his unique vocal talent and dynamic charisma, Black captures the legendary style and mannerisms of Elvis so perfectly, you’ll swear you’re in the presence of the king of rock and roll.
This event will be held outdoors at Heritage State Park at 6 p.m. Attendees may bring lawn chairs, blankets, or towels to sit on. Registration is not required. All ages are welcome.

Youth Cornhole Tournament underway
FALL RIVER — The city’s first Youth Cornhole Tournament kicked off earlier this month. The free Greater Fall River Re-Creation event, sponsored by RE/MAX, is open to youth in two age groups – 6-12 and 13-17. The tournaments, which stretch through August, are all slated to take place noon to 4 p.m. and the remaining schedule is as follows:

Clam boil at Somerset church
SOMERSET — St. John of God Parish will hold its annual clam boil on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Tickets are $25 or $15 without clams. Kids eat free (chicken nuggets and fries). Take out orders will be available from 5 to 5:30 p.m. with indoor dining starting at 5:30.

Birdies for Bayhawks tees off
DARTMOUTH — Bristol Community College will host its annual Birdies for Bayhawks benefit golf tournament on Monday, Sept. 13, at the Donald Ross-designed Country Club of New Bedford, 585 Slocum Road, Dartmouth. Check-in begins at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun-style start at noon.
Bristol Community College hopes you will join in a day of fun to raise crucial support for our college and its mission. In partnering with Bristol Athletics, the tournament creates funding for programs such as transfer advising and wellness and time management clinics that support our scholar-athletes. Due to the safety of all our players and staff, we will continue to follow COVID-19 guidance and protocol from the state as well as the Bristol Together Plan. The Country Club of New Bedford is committed to providing our players with a safe and enjoyable day on the course.

Toe Jam Puppet Band at library
WESTPORT — The Toe Jam Puppet Band will bring a “Toe Jam Variety Show” to the Westport Free Public Library, 408 Old County Road, on Friday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. This free program will take place outdoors on the library grounds. Registration is not required. The show is funded with a grant from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust administered by the Bank of America. Bring blankets, chairs, and a picnic dinner. Ice cream treats will be provided by the Friends of Westport Library. The Toe Jam Puppet Band is sure to be a fun, family event. Rain or shine, the show will go on.
WaterFire announces 2021 season
PROVIDENCE — WaterFire, the popular art experience in downtown Providence, is back with lightings from September through December.
The 2021 WaterFire season currently includes four full lightings and five partial lightings.
The season will open with a full lighting thanking COVID Heroes on Saturday, Sept. 4, Labor Day weekend. Other lightings will include WaterFire’s 25th birthday celebration; a BIPOC Arts, Technology and Business Night; WaterFire Salute to Veterans, and the return of a WaterFire for the Holidays in December.

WESTPORT — Greater Fall River Re-Creation will host its second annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Acoaxet Country Club, 152 Howland Road, Westport.

Wine Run at Westport Vineyard
WESTPORT — On your marks, get set, drink. Er, I mean run!
The 2021 Wine Run at Westport Rivers Vineyard and Winery will step off Saturday, Oct. 2.
From 3 to 6 p.m. enjoy a beautiful run through Westport Rivers Vineyard, at 417 Hixbridge Road. Grab some friends and enjoy a trail run along gorgeous farms and Westport River, finishing amongst the vines. After the race, there will be dinner, wine, and music in the vineyard. Race participants will receive a souvenir wine glass as a memento of their experience.
The course is approximately 3 miles along varying trails.
